The University of Michigan Health System department has conducted research and concluded that almost 20 percent of American teenagers and young adults suffer from obesity. Due to the steady struggle with teenagers and their weight numerous weight loss camps and programs have been constructed all across the US. They are also becoming a very popular destination for parents to send their children during their summer vacation from school.

One of the biggest challenges for parents sending their children to a weight loss camp is knowing if they are making the right choice. Parents should completely understand what a weight loss camp is prior to making this decision. A weight loss camp is available to any teen aged person that is struggling with their weight in proportion to their height. Usually, teens that weight more than 20 percent more of the average weight for their age group for their height. Weight loss camps can be a wonderful solution for teenagers that are not extremely active and spend more time watching television, playing on the Internet, or playing video games than participating in sports.

Teenagers will be on a strict schedule while at a weight loss camp. Their schedule will usually involve a great deal of physical activities. Weight loss camps are designed to help teach the teenager that workout routines can be enjoyable. Teens are not forced to run on a treadmill the entire day, but are motivated to play sports such as soccer, swimming, football, softball and so on.

Weight loss camps are also designed to instill better habits in the teenager. They are taught the importance of consuming meals that are healthy, as well as healthier options for snacking. Weight loss camps prohibit teenagers from bringing candy into the facility and provide them with healthy snacks as an alternative.

Most weight loss camps divide the teenagers into difference age groups and their gender. There are some weight loss camps that provide a same sex option, but most of the weight loss camp facilities are co-ed. It is important to note that genders and age groups are divided in the co-ed camps so that they are not sleeping in co-ed bunks.

Most weight loss camps are overnight. They are not usually a day camp where the teenager returns home in the evening and back to the camp in the morning. There are numerous camps that provide accommodations during the entire summer vacation from June until the end of August. These camps also offer short term programs that can last three to six weeks.

Weight loss camps have the ability of being the start of a healthy future to many teenagers. It is important to keep in mind that no child wants to think that they are attending a weight loss camp as punishment. You should sit down with your teenage and discuss the numerous benefits of the weight loss camp and make the best decision possible together.

Breakfast is said to be the most important meal of the day. From eggs to cereal, America has a variety of breakfast items. During the years that variety has expanded to include some unusual breakfast menu items such as liver and ever cold pizza! There are some who even skip breakfast entirely and ignore the important meal message. Then there are others who have to wolf down their breakfast, eating a plain cereal bar for instance, instead of enjoying a nice proper meal such as a bowl of cereal with ice cold milk, that hot cup of coffee, and a nice piece of fruit along the side.

So what are the most common things eaten for breakfast each day? Here are some classic old timers:

Apple turnover

Eggs Benedict

Cereal with milk

Doughnut and Coke

Pancakes with hot syrup

Pancakes with gravy

Waffles

Bacon and eggs

Egg and sausage on bagel

Eggs and steak

Peanut Butter and banana sandwich

Many cups of coffee

In the recent years polls have been taken to determine how many people actually each breakfast each day. 83 % of American seniors (65 years and older) have breakfast each day and 71% of people between the ages of 55-64 also have breakfast each day. In the younger generation however, people between the ages of 18-34, there is a 53% amount in regards to breakfast eaters. Why do older people eat breakfast more often than a younger population? We may never know. One reason that can be is that since younger people have busier schedules it is harder to have a proper breakfast. For example you have people who have to get their kids off to school, people who rush to work, and the people who are also probably just not breakfast eaters. Instead of eating breakfast with time, they have to do the “rush” that was mentioned earlier.

As far as which breakfast item is the most popular choice between men and women cereal with cold milk is by far the top item. In fact it was found that 35% of women and 27 % of men turn to the classic cold cereal breakfast. The second most popular choice is the bacon and eggs classic which is in fact the common choice for 15% of the men population and 6% for the woman population.

It might be a surprise to some of you but one last thing that seems to be quite popular on the breakfast dish in this day and age is cold pizza. 48% of people under the age of 45 have tried it and so have 16% of seniors. 23% of people who work full time have been known to have eaten cold pizza for breakfast at some point in their life. Imagine having pizza for breakfast with that cup of cold soda. Who knew that could happen?

So it should be fair to say that anything could be eaten for breakfast nowadays. Just remember that it is that most important meal of the day!

Whatever is your daily grind … whether it be at home with a baby or the kids, or stressed out at work, or returning from a trip, or even after a day of leisure like shopping, gym workout, watching a movie … there are times when you just can’t fall asleep. It’s like you’re on overdrive and can’t settle down and relax.

Let’s run down on some ways that can help you have a good night’s sleep.

1. Not your usual remedies.

Did you know that there are many acupressure points that will encourage you to sleep? For example, gently press or massage the first crease on both of your wrists for 5 minutes. Also, you may check the internet for more interesting pressure points. You might even discover the spot in your head that a professional masseuse can touch and put you to sleep.

Foot tub. Soak your feet in hot water with 2-3 drops of your favorite scented oil for 15 minutes. This is especially good during cold days. Warm feet contribute to a good night’s rest.

Deep breathing slows down your heart rate and allows you to calm down and dose off to sleep. For example, inhale deeply for 8 counts then exhale for 6 counts.

2. Talk to someone about each other’s day.

If you have kids, ask them about their day … hopefully, there’s something hilarious in their narratives so that all of you will have the benefits of lower stress hormones circulating in your blood.

In his memoir, Norman Cousins (an American political journalist) described how 10 minutes of laughter watching Marx Brothers’ comedy films and TV episodes of “Candid Camera” helped him get 2 hours of pain-free sleep.

William Fry, a pioneer in laughter research, says that 1 minute of laughter equals 10 minutes on the rowing machine. That saves you from doing your night exercises. It also relaxes your facial muscles and releases the tension in your body that leaves you in a good mood to sleep.

With your partner, exchange anecdotes that will keep you both connected and feeling warm and loved. It’s a perfect way to relax, get intimate, and then fall into a deep satisfying sleep.

Living alone? Then call your parents or a friend … someone with whom you could talk to and relax.

3. Sleeping area … is it conducive to sleep?

Noise and other irritating sounds – Can you hear street noise or your neighbor’s chatter? Is there someone in the house who is snoring, crying, etc.? Are any of your appliances producing low vibrating sounds?

Perhaps, it’s time to check and improve your bedroom window panes, curtains, wall insulation, even door jambs in order to block out such irritating sounds. But, if your partner snores, you could use ear plugs.

“No light” is best for sleeping. If total darkness frightens you, then plug on a 5-watt night light.

Check your bed and beddings. It is possible that your mattress is no longer comfortable, or your beddings need to be refreshed, or your pillows do not support your neck and head. These factors lead to a misaligned sleeping position and to unnecessary skin irritations or sensations.

4. Take time to eat and drink.

Try to finish your dinner at least 2 hours before sleeping. This gives enough time for your stomach to digest and settle down. You could also take a short 15-minute walk (if safe) to help in digestion.

Likewise, minimize your intake of caffeine, alcohol and nicotine at night so that they don’t keep you awake.

Can’t stop your night snacks … then, just eat small portions and take warm drinks.

5. Regular ways of settling down.

Watch TV or listen to music or read something boring.

If you can, try to avoid turning on that internet connection. If you can not, set your computer to an 11pm shutdown (i.e. parental control mode).

Take a hot shower or soak in a warm bathtub.
